More than twelve years ago, I decided to write the concept of a film that I registered in LA.
The logline of what was going to become USONI... a Future was saying that “... in 2062, in a chaotic world in which Europe is dead due to global warming, nuclear catastrophes, and climate change, the great migration now goes from North to South, directly opposite to the phenomenon of the beginning of the century. We follow a couple on their dangerous journey to escape Hell Europe. They are determined to have their child born in the light... in the warm light of the African sun...”
The then “crazy” scenario of a world turned upside down became not so crazy when, in 2020, the pandemic hit the world. Against all logic, the virus seemed to affect more the rich countries than the so-called “developing” countries, it was more fatal in the First World than in the Third World, and the northern hemisphere was more suffering than the southern hemisphere... with the confinement, the Sun disappeared for a lot of people, the North started looking like Hell and now the land of hope appeared to be in the South... Africa...
The years before the break out of Covid 19 were particularly marked by the tragic climate change that everybody was now witnessing every day on their screens or in reality. Or in the USONI synopsis “... in 2062, in a chaotic world in which Europe is dead due to global warming, nuclear catastrophes, and climate change, the great migration now goes from North to South, directly opposite to the phenomenon of the beginning of the century...”. I could myself witness the chaos in my country, the South of France, for many people, a place of luxury retirement, summer vacation, and tourist destination. All of a sudden, I could see my crazy scenario developing in front of my eyes, floods killing people and destroying villages, drought devastating crops and world-famous vineyards, water-raising in oceans hence erasing beautiful beaches and scenic coastline.
USONI was, basically, inspired by the magnificent lady Wangari Mathai was. It was in 2004 that I got the great privilege to film her on her tour in Japan after she received the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. I was allowed to listen to all the interviews, and speeches, both official and also unofficial. What I got from this experience is immense, it opened my eyes to what the world was going to become if it didn't mobilize itself for a drastic change... a change to the injustice that has been ruling this world for too long. Wangari Mathai got the Nobel Prize for Peace because she argued that, planting trees and securing food for the people, would prevent clashes between neighbors. At this very moment, a war is going on in Europe. A war that is killing people on the ground and is going to starve to death millions of people in the world.
USONI scenario says:
“Mother Earth is angry! Dormant volcanoes erupt, and violent tsunamis have washed away the
mega cities of Europe leaving only rubbles. Food, clean water, and shelter is scarce.
Europeans have been reduced to a miserly subterranean life, scrounging about for dismal
provisions and with nothing to look forward to.”
Isn't it what is happening in Ukraine, right now, in the XXI century, and these volcanoes erupting altogether to create a black cloud blocking the sun, could they be the symbol of the threat of a pending disaster...

Il y a plus de douze ans, j'ai décidé d'écrire le concept d'un film que j'ai enregistré à Los Angeles.
Le synopsis de ce qui allait devenir "USONI... un certain Futur" disait que "... en 2062, dans un monde chaotique où l'Europe est morte à cause du réchauffement de la planète, des catastrophes nucléaires et du changement climatique, la grande migration va désormais du Nord au Sud, à l'opposé du phénomène du début du siècle. Nous suivons un couple dans son dangereux voyage pour fuir l'enfer européen. Ils sont déterminés à ce que leur enfant naisse dans la
lumière... dans la lumière chaude du soleil africain..."
Le scénario alors "fou" d'un monde bouleversé est devenu moins fou lorsque, en 2020, la pandémie a frappé le monde. Contre toute logique, le virus semblait toucher davantage les pays riches que les pays dits "en voie de développement", il était plus mortel dans le Premier Monde que dans le Tiers Monde, et l'hémisphère nord souffrait davantage que l'hémisphère sud... avec le confinement, le Soleil disparaissait pour beaucoup de gens, le Nord commençait à ressembler à l'Enfer et maintenant la terre d'espoir semblait être dans le Sud.... l'Afrique...
Les années qui ont précédé le Covid 19 ont été particulièrement marquées par l'accélération du changement climatique dont tout le monde était désormais témoin chaque jour sur son écran ou dans la réalité. A commencer par moi qui ai pu voir de mes yeux le chaos dans mon pays, le Sud de la France, jusqu'à lors un lieu de retraite de luxe, de vacances d'été et de destination touristique. Tout d'un coup, mon scénario fou se développait sous mes yeux, des inondations tuant des gens et détruisant des villages, la sécheresse dévastant les cultures et les vignobles de renommée mondiale, la montée des eaux dans les océans effaçant ainsi les belles plages et le littoral pittoresque.
USONI a été, à la base, inspiré par la magnifique dame qu'était Wangari Mathai. C'est en 2004 que j'ai eu le grand privilège de la filmer lors de sa tournée au Japon après qu'elle ait reçu le PRIX NOBEL DE LA PAIX. J'ai été autorisé à écouter toutes les interviews et tous les discours, officiels et officieux. Ce que j'ai retiré de cette expérience est immense, elle m'a ouvert les yeux sur ce que le monde allait devenir s'il ne se mobilisait pas pour un changement radical... un changement de l'injustice qui gouverne ce monde depuis trop longtemps. Wangari Mathai a reçu le prix Nobel de la paix parce qu'elle a fait valoir que la plantation d'arbres et l'accès à la nourriture aux populations permettraient d'éviter les conflits entre voisins. En ce moment même, une guerre se déroule en Europe. Une guerre qui tue des gens sur le terrain et qui va faire mourir de faim des millions de personnes dans le monde.
Dans le scénario d'USONI "Mère Nature est en colère ! Des volcans endormis entrent en éruption et de violents tsunamis ont emporté les mégapoles d'Europe, ne laissant que des ruines. La nourriture, l'eau potable sont rares. Les survivants sont réduits à vivre sous-terre, misérablement, se nourrissant de ce qu'ils peuvent trouver d'encore comestible...
N'est-ce pas ce qui se passe en Ukraine, en ce moment même, au XXIe siècle, et ces volcans qui entrent en éruption pour créer un nuage noir bloquant le soleil, pourraient-ils être le symbole de la menace d'une catastrophe atomique ?
